Today, Ed Sheeran’s fifth studio album drops titled, =, or Equals. It is the latest in Sheeran’s mathematically themed albums with his past four albums titled, +, -, x, and ÷. What will his following albums be titled now? My guess is equations.
The lead singles off the album titled, “Bad Habits” and “Shivers” have gotten mixed reviews from fans despite “Bad Habits” current radio success in the US. Many find the new synthetic and electronic sound on these singles as offputting and uncharacteristic of Sheeran. However, in the UK both singles have had major success already and held number one spots for several weeks.
This new album comes on the heels of several life changes for the artist as he has had a child, turned 30, and gotten married since his previous album. Sheeran is known for his heartfelt ballads and this album delivers more of them. This album is Sheeran’s most personal yet with songs like “Leave Your Life”, in which Sheeran professes his life-long love for his wife, Cherry. As well as the song, “Sandman”, which is a lullaby for his 15-month old daughter.
This album is not your typical pop album that was written to appeal to the masses, it feels personal. It seems Sheeran wrote this album as more of a milestone marker for his career and personal life, and I think fans will appreciate it.
